March 22nd, 2013

Windows Blue for TabletsMicrosoft’s Windows Blue suggests an accelerated pace of innovation, targeting enterprises looking to adopt a mobile strategy. Microsoft is expected to release an update codenamed “Blue” for its Windows 8 platform later this year.

If “Windows Blue” is released this year it would mark the end of Microsoft’s three-year OS upgrade cycle and speaks to the increased pace of acceleration we have been highlighting. “Windows Blue” is believed to be the first of a number of annual operating system updates to Windows 8 and is the first Windows release on an accelerated schedule.

Windows 8 is compatible with Windows 7 software, services and hardware peripherals, and adds Secure Boot with Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI), built-in virus and malware protection. Microsoft and Intel have enabled OEMs to develop tablets on the Windows and x86 platforms through their Windows 8 and CloverTrail offerings (respectively).

On the hardware side
, the Intel Z2760 has also proved that it can provide performance per watt similar to the ARM-based iPad. HP (HP ElitePad 900), Dell (Dell Latitude 10) and Lenovo (Lenovo ThinkPad Tablet 2) have created tablets based on Intel’s CloverTrail and Windows 8, combining consumer functions of tablets with enterprise targeted features.
