We believe there’s upside in the medium term, given it has yet to fully monetize mobile business. Alibaba is on track to reach its target of US$500bn GMV by 2016. GOSF 2014 – Big Hit, Complaints Rise Too

GOSF India Big HitThe success of the Great Online Shopping Festival (GOSF) 2014 is another indicator of rising acceptance of the e-commerce channel amongst Indian consumers.

Google noted that the GOSF 2014 sale has been a huge success and has exceeded the wildest of their expectations. This online shopping festival had 450 partners (ecommerce sites), nearly twice the number from last year. Offers were available across plethora of categories ranging from low ticket items (books, home appliances, etc) to high value tickets like homes, cars and mobile phones. Firstcry, Jabong participated in this sale festival. GOSF site saw nearly 14mn visitors (across 220 cities) with consumer engagement up ~7x vs last year.

eBay Sales Affected by Security Breach + Google Panda Algorithm Update

ebay SalesAccording to ChannelAdvisor May eCommerce same store sales (SSS) data, eBay SSS increased 11.5% y/y in May vs. 14.0% y/y in April, a 250bps m/m deceleration (off a 450bps easier y/y comp). eBay SSS weakened an estimated 540bps after May 21st (from +13.3% growth to +7.9%) due to the combined impact of the Google algorithm change and security breach. As sales in June are also likely to be impacted (uncertainty remains) and eBay management must come out and clear the air. This means that eBay Management may have to bid aggressively on Search marketing and across the Adwords / Double Click Platform to retain consumer stickiness / acquisition.

Can eBay Survive the Google MarketPlace / Amazon Onslaught ?

ebay SurvivalInternet Auction Giant, EBAY’s core marketplace is facing rising competitive threats over the medium-to-long term from Google and Amazon, as both continue to build out their own eCommerce platforms. For Google in particular (while we have not seen much direct evidence), we continue to believe it will “close the loop” on ecommerce by enabling transactions directly on Google Products pages.
