Android G1 Unveiled by Google

Google the only company that adheres to the best software development process [as told by Bjarne Stroustrup] ventured into the mobile development vertical with its open source Android platform.

Today the company has unveiled the first handset, a smart phone manufactured by HTC and will be marketed by T-Mobile, USA under the brand G1. [Picture on left, Mobile India has more pictures of the G1 Android Phone]

Many people had built up expectations of comparing it with Apple's iPhone and i am sure there is some disappointment on this front. We think G1 is a smart phone for developers to build applications or for geeks who are always on the Infocomm highway.

John Doerr, Board Member of Google Inc has already setup a $100 mn iFund to help startups developing applications for the iPhone. Now expect some money from Doerr and other VCs to flow into G1 Android Apps development community.

Yahoo! India has launched private beta version of its India Specific Social Network - SpotM. It is not very clear why the "M" in SpotM - Masti or Mobile or ... ?

SpotM allows mobile SMS integration to chat and have also added an anonymous friend feature without revealing your mobile number. This is mostly in-line with current trends in the Indian social networking space. This is Yahoo's second attempt after reciving poor response for 360 and shutting down its Mash. Yahoo 360 is something like Rediff Connexions.

BigFlix Movie Download Set-Top Box

For the first time in India [and probably the world ?] Reliance Entertainment group company BigFlix is planning to launch a separate Set-Top Box to enable users to download and play movies using the same. Mostly NRIs have used BigFlix's movie download services which is currently through the PC / Laptop and Broadband Platform.

Company sources indicated that the BigFlix Set-top Box will be much smaller than your regular Digital /Dish TV set-top box. The idea behind this move could be to curtail video piracy by encoding the videos to play to BigFlix platform. Currently 50K to 75k videos are downloaded from BigFlix every month.

BigFlix is the largest DVD Movie rental company in India with 17,000 titles and 120 stores as well. BigFlix plans to expand its presence to 20 more cities and also sell DVD Movies.

iPhone 3G struggling to SELL

After the heavily publicized and hyped launch of iPhone 3G Mobile phone in India, both Bharti Airtel and Vodafone India are struggling to sell the phone. According to media reports they may have not been able to sell more than 1,500 phones in the first week.

We think the iPhone 3G launch is a miserable failure in India due to pricing and wrong marketing strategies. Well, most Indians were hoping to get the iPhone 3G in India for $299, the price at which it is sold in the US. However, Airtel and Vodafone completely failed to educate their call center executives as well as prospective customers that iPhone in the US is sold under Wireless Plan Deals at that cheap rate and customers will incur a monthly charge which is more than regular wireless calling.

Secondly, Airtel asked customers to pre-register. Around 100,000 registered and when they called back to ask on the status, the call center as well as Airtel vendors had no knowledge of it. I think they should have started marketing the phone to their premium customers, but the company neglected them as well.

In a last bid attempt to push the expensive phone into the hands of customers, Bharti Airtel has tied up with VISA credit card and is offering the iphone to SBI Credit Card holders as well as ICICI Bank Visa Card holders on EMI basis.

Gartner Research Analyst has said that the price of iPhone may fall upto 15% in India. So think twice before you fall into any credit card traps.

India's leading Bank, HDFC Bank's ATM Network and Online Banking operations have collapsed for more than 18 hours now. Cash could not be withdrawn from ATM. We tried accessing the HDFC Online Banking for urgent fund transfer but have been getting this message of regret.
HDFC Bank in a Press Release acknowledged and said,

The bank experienced a technical problem in one of its system applications catering to its retail customers, affecting certain services. The bank's other systems like corporate banking, depository, treasury, credit cards etc functioned normally.

So that means its Credit Card swiping machines at vendor locations are just working fine. If you are facing accessing any of their services do leave a comment including the city + other details where you tried.
